Additional information

Electric field strength, often referred to as electric field, is a fundamental concept in electromagnetism. It is a measure of the force experienced by an electric charge (positive or negative) in the presence of an electric field. The electric field exerts a force on a charged particle, causing it to experience an electric force that can either attract or repel the charge.

Mathematically, the electric field strength at a point in space is defined as the force experienced by a positive test charge placed at that point, divided by the magnitude of the test charge:

E=Fq

Where:

  • E is the electric field strength
  • F is the force
  • q is the test charge

The standard unit for electric field strength in the International System of Units (SI) is volts per meter (V/m). It is defined as the electric field strength that will produce a force of 1 newton on a charge of 1 coulomb.
